About

Katherine is a soprano from New Zealand, recently graduated from the Opera Studies programme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied under Yvonne Kenny. She has since completed a Fellowship at the Guildhall, and was a Young Artist with Garsington Opera for the 2021 season. In New Zealand, she was an Emerging Artist with New Zealand Opera, and a member of the inaugural Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation Singer Development Programme. Since moving to the UK, she has performed at the Barbican, Wigmore Hall, Snape Maltings, Sadler’s Wells, and live for BBC Radio 3. She has been a Britten-Pears Young Artist at the Aldeburgh Festival twice, and she performed Britten’s On This Island in a newly choreographed piece with the Richard Alston Dance Company in a tour around the UK. She recently performed a recital at the ‘Women in Music’ Festival in Gdańsk, Poland, and performed a recital at the Oxford Lieder ‘Spring Song’ Festival as an Emerging Artist. Katherine holds an Artist Diploma and a Master of Performance with Distinction from the Guildhall, and a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the New Zealand School of Music.

 

This year, Katherine has performed the title role in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia with English Touring Opera for their Spring Tour, as well as stepping in for Delia in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims. In 2022, she performed with If Opera in their inaugural season (singing Susanna in Il segreto di Susanna, the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, and covering Magda in La rondine) and performed with the Glyndebourne Chorus on the 2022 Tour. Also in 2022, she covered Musetta (La bohème) for English Touring Opera, and during her time at the Guildhall performed Barbarina (The Little Green Swallow), Susanna (Il segreto di Susanna), La principessa (La bella dormente nel bosco), and Judith Weir’s solo unaccompanied opera King Harald’s Saga. Other roles include the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta with Les Azuriales Opera in Nice; the Governess (The Turn of the Screw) at the Barnes Music Festival; Amelia in the première of TIDE at the Aldeburgh Festival; Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) with Bloomsbury Opera; Tatyana (Eugene Onegin) and Giulietta (I Capuleti e I Montecchi) with Days Bay Opera in New Zealand. As an Emerging Artist with New Zealand Opera, she sang Adina in a touring version of The Elixir of Love in schools around the country. Katherine has recently performed one of the principal roles in Zoo!, a new opera written for children with special educational needs produced by English Touring Opera, touring around the UK and to Luxembourg. Most recently, Katherine performed Poulenc’s one-woman opera, La voix humaine, with Green Opera at the Arcola Theatre as part of the Grimeborn Festival 2023.
